Folic Acid

Folic acid is important for a developing baby. It’s needed in the early weeks of pregnancy, before you might even know that you are pregnant. If you could become pregnant, take a multivitamin with folic acid in it every day. Click on the pills to learn more.

Folic acid taken before pregnancy can help lower the risk of having a baby born with a neural tube defect.
Look for a daily multivitamin with 0.4mg (400 mcg) of folic acid in it. In some cases, more is needed - talk to your health care provider about the amount that is right for you.
Remember to take a multivitamin that contains folic acid every day - set up a routine that works best for you.
It's hard to get the amount of folic acid needed from food alone.
Look for either "folic acid" or "folate" on the label of a multivitamin bottle.
Start your multivitamin at least 3 months before trying to have a baby. This helps to make sure that you have enough folic acid in the early weeks of pregnancy, before you even know you are pregnant.
