What is an STI?
STIs are sexually transmitted infections that can be passed from one person to another through sexual contact. This can include oral, vaginal, and anal sex, genital touching and sharing sex toys.
Some STIs (e.g., HPV) can increase a person’s risk of getting certain types of cancers. Having one STI can increase your risk of getting another.
STIs can have a negative effect on your health and fertility. Even if there are no symptoms, STIs can be passed on to partners. It’s important to talk with your partners, practice safer sex (e.g., use condoms) and get tested regularly so infections can be treated early.
Talk with your health care provider if you think you may have an STI or would like to be tested. Testing is also available at STI clinics or Sexual and Reproductive Health Clinics.
