What effect does tobacco and vaping products have on me?

If you can reduce and quit using tobacco or vaping products, it benefits your health and the health of your future developing baby.  Avoiding smoke and aerosol from vaping supports a healthy pregnancy while promoting growth of the developing baby’s brain and lungs.

Helping your baby to grow healthy is important, but your health is important too! If you can reduce and quit it will benefit you and your family.

Stopping smoking can have the following health benefits:

  • Breathing will be easier and less coughing
  • Less risk for tooth decay and periodontal disease (no need to worry so much about bad breath)
  • More energy
  • Better healing after surgery or illness
  • Food will taste better
  • Clothes, hair and home will smell fresher
  • Skin, nails and teeth won’t stain
  • Fewer wrinkles as you age
  • Feeling proud about quitting
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Decreased pulse rate
  • Body temperature of hands and feet may increase
  • Decreased risk of cancers – lung, throat, oral, kidney, bladder, cervix
  • Decreased risk of heart disease, stroke, and circulatory problems
  • Decreased risk of respiratory diseases (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease {COPD}, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, colds, flu, pneumonia)
  • Decreased risk of peptic ulcers, Crohn’s disease, tooth loss, gum disease, osteoporosis, thyroid disease, menstrual problems
  • You will improve your odds of living a longer and healthier life

Stopping vaping can have the following health benefits:

  • No more exposure to harmful chemicals in aerosol from vaping
  • Vaping research is new and the evidence on the health effects from vaping is still low. Short and long-term health impacts are yet to be fully understood.
  • Aerosol from vaping contains cancer-causing chemicals and early studies suggest quitting vaping may reduce risk for cancers such as bladder cancer
  • Less risk for tooth decay toothache and periodontal disease
  • Less risk of breathing problems from aerosol components
  • No risk of vaping device explosions causing mouth cuts and teeth fractures or cartridge leaks causing burns
