What are the causes of infertility?

Damage to, or abnormalities of the reproductive system, age, infections, certain medical conditions and some behaviours are all linked to infertility.

The following can affect the ability to become pregnant and conceive a baby:

  • heavy alcohol use
  • using tobacco or and vaping products
  • being exposed to a hot workplace environment or working with chemicals
  • being well above or well below a healthy weight
  • having or having had an STI or other infections

In 5-10% of cases, no cause of infertility is found.

Damage of the reproductive system (e.g., ovaries, fallopian tubes) and some medical conditions can affect ovulation.

Injuries or illness affecting the reproductive system (e.g., testicles, vas deferens) can also lead to infertility. Injuries to the groin may stop producing sperm. Problems could include sperm production, shape of the sperm or sperm’s ability to move. Changes in sperm could make it harder for the sperm to reach and enter the egg. Some brain injuries can affect hormones which, in turn, can affect sexual function or sperm.
