If I think I might have an STI, what should I do?
If you think you may have an STI, talk with your health care provider. It’s important to get tested right away.
To learn about STI testing, see STI Clinics: Services and common STI questions
Testing is available in Alberta in STI clinics or Sexual and Reproductive Health Clinics
Make sure to avoid all sexual contact until you’ve been tested and treated.
Treatment
There is treatment for STIs.
When you’re being treated for an STI, it’s important to follow your health care provider’s advice. For bacterial infections, have no sexual contact with anyone while you’re being treated, and for 7 days after you finish the treatment. Even if you’ve been treated for an STI before, you can still get the same infection again.
If you have an STI that’s caused by a virus, talk with your health care provider about ways to improve your symptoms and help prevent passing the infection to others.
